FIGURES, SPACES, AND THE INTIMATE NARRATIVE

This workshop explores the relationship between two figures within intimate interior spaces. Through painting, we will investigate the emotional and psychological dynamics that unfold between people and the environments they inhabit. Settings such as bathrooms, bedrooms, and kitchens are familiar spaces of daily life, yet they often hold moments of vulnerability, tension, and quiet connection.

What happens behind closed doors? What lingers in shadow, and what can light reveal? These spaces exist not only in the physical world but also within our memories and inner lives. Together we will explore the connections and tensions that arise within relationships and the spaces we occupy.

Working from both live models and photographic references, students will develop paintings that explore narrative, atmosphere, and emotional presence. Using a direct painting approach, the workshop will emphasize flesh, structure, and form while building strong figurative compositions. Students will practice mixing paint, making confident decisions, and translating observation from life and photographs into compelling narrative images. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their own personal narratives by taking their own photographs and building compositions from them.

We will also look at painters of the past and present who created profound connections with their subjects and transformed those connections into deeply personal works. We will examine the technical and conceptual choices that can amplify the emotional and narrative depth of figurative painting, discussing the visual language and energy that emerge through technical, emotional, and metaphysical narratives.

From closely cropped figure pairings to genre-inspired scenes, students will design compositions that feel intimate, psychologically alive, and visually compelling. Along the way, participants will refine their own working methods while investigating what motivates the act of painting emotionally, technically, and personally.

YOUR STAY

Your Arrival & First Day

On the first day, we’ll ease into the experience with a relaxed and welcoming start. We offer two group transfers from Life Drawing Barcelona in the city center at different times during the day. Once everyone has arrived at the venue, we’ll gather for a welcome and introduction session, where we’ll go over the schedule and details of the week ahead. Afterward, you’ll be assigned your room, and we’ll enjoy a laid-back evening with delicious local food and drinks—an opportunity to unwind and get to know each other.

The Workshop Experience

The following day, we’ll dive into five consecutive days of intensive learning with your chosen tutor. The detailed workshop itinerary will be shared on arrival. Throughout the week, we’ll also enjoy field trips, communal dinners, and fun evenings—all carefully arranged so you can focus entirely on learning, creating, and making the most of your time. Throughout the workshop, each participant will have a one-on-one session with their tutor for a personalized portfolio review.
